Class D fire extinguishers put out combustible metal fires.
The best way to put out these fires is by suffocating and
eliminating the oxygen element.
The agent also helps absorb the heat from the fuel.
Class D fire extinguishers are dry powder fire extinguishers.
The powder agent used can be powdered graphite, granulated sodium chloride,
or a copper-based powder, all of which are effective in separating the fuel
(ignited combustible metal) from oxygen.
Class D fire extinguishers are specifically designed to put out fires
caused by burning metals.
These extinguishers work by using a dry powder extinguishing agent to
interrupt the chain reaction of combustion.

Class D Fire Extinguisher
contains a special blended Sodium Chloride-based dry powder extinguishing agent.
Heat from the fire causes it to
cake and form a crust excluding air and dissipating heat from burning metal.
Metal fires involving magnesium, sodium, potassium,

Dry powders for Class D fire extinguishers include: Sodium chloride (NaCl):
This salt-based powder is often used in Class D fire extinguishers for
lithium fires.
It helps absorb the heat of the fire and forms a bar barrier over the
burning material, preventing oxygen from reaching the burning material.
Graphite powder: Graphite powder is often used in high-temperature
applications, it absorbs heat and forms a non-reactive layer over
the metal flame, stopping the flame from spreading. Copper powder:
Copper powder can be effective in extinguishing fires involving certain metals,
such as lithium and magnesium.
When the dry powder covers the surface of the fire, it forms a protective
layer, isolating the burning material from oxygen, helping to suppress the fire.
The dry powder suffocates the flame, cutting off the oxygen supply,
thus preventing the combustion process from continuing.
